Finding new music is one thing that I love most, and finding new music that speaks to me means even more.  Music has the power to allow listeners to feel emotion and passion that cannot be found elsewhere.  I am so happy that I stumbled upon Drew De Four’s music, and that I got the chance to sit down with him to see why music is the path that he chose to follow.

About Drew De Four

Drew De Four is a 28-year-old musician from Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in the city of Grosse Point, and has lived in Michigan for his whole life.  He attended Eastern Michigan University, and then enrolled at the University of Michigan.  He now lives in Ann Arbor, and has no intention of leaving anytime soon.  He loves reading, cooking, and talking, but music has always been there for him.

His Inspiration

Drew started playing at piano bars in Pontiac when he was 18 years old, and this helped to fund his original career.  Although his first record has a deal with Grey Dogs Records in Japan, he has independently produced four albums without a label, and is comfortable with the independent route.  He loves playing covers for a living, but really enjoys playing his own original songs as well.  Drew would consider himself a “do it yourself musician” and the “next evolution of the piano man.”  It is this take on his own music that draws me to his humble style.

Drew’s Music

Drew is a multi-talented musician, as he can play guitar, drums, bass, harmonica, mandolin, and the piano.  Not to mention he has an amazing vocal ability that shines through each one of his songs.  After meeting with Drew, he gave me two of his albums to listen to:  “The Troubadour” and “Bartillery.”  Both albums have different feels, but are great listens and are available in full on iTunes.  Although I loved both albums, there is one of Drew’s songs that I cannot stop listening to.  This song is called “Keep a Light.”  The song begins with a beautiful piano riff, and soon after enters Drew’s complementary voice, which sets the song up for a huge success.  The song itself tells a story, as the wonderful voice of Drew’s wife sings along.  The chorus of “keep a light outside your door, tonight” is a beautiful line that can resonate with listeners.  As I listen to the song while writing this post, I am deep in thought and rid of worry.  Only a perfectly constructed song can do this.  Take a listen to this song.  You won’t regret it.

More to Come

Drew has toured in Japan and all over the United States, and just finished a summer tour in Ireland.  He will be performing with his wife at the Ann Street Music Hall in Ypsilanti, Michigan on December 1st at 8 PM.  Although I have not had the opportunity to see Drew perform live, I have the feeling that his live shows are ones with pure emotion that also promote a fun atmosphere.  Also make sure to check out the music video of Drew De Four’s single, “Keep a Light” below.
