I remember it like it was yesterday. Michigan basketball was ready to be a powerhouse again, with Tim Hardaway Jr., Jordan Morgan, Darius Morris, Zack Novak, Stu Douglass, and incoming freshman Trey Burke. Of course, Morris ended up unexpectedly declaring for the NBA Draft, leaving Michigan basketball in a state of uncertainty.
This is not to say that Michigan basketball was not a success this year. Trey Burke stepped up as a freshman to admirably lead the team to a Big Ten Championship. I guess it’s just easy to think about the “what ifs” in regards to our potential had Darius Morris remained in school.
Michigan basketball has been projected to be a top-five program going into next season. That is, of course, if Trey Burke stays in school. Unfortunately, it seems that the prospect of playing in the NBA may have him heading out sooner than later. It has been reported that he will be declaring for the draft; however, an official statement has not been made. Yes, the Wolverines have superstar Mitch McGary coming in next year, with another potential star in Glenn Robinson III. However, it seems that Michigan will not reach elite status unless Burke stays. And right now, that seems very unlikely. Michigan fans, let’s hope for a miracle. Trey Burke…say it ain’t so.
