There is definitely more to health and weight then a body mass index calculation, however it is incontestable that excess weight and more importantly obesity contributes significantly to the appearance of certain diseases, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure. These diseases poses serious health risks. Weight loss can be achieved by determination, and I agree that surgery should not be the first weight loss method to try. Exercise, sports, diet and eating healthy are the cornerstones for weight loss and even bariatric surgery without these won't work. On the other hand the surgery can be an effective weight loss option and it is each individuals choice to decide how they want or how they can loose weight.

"...the relationship between weight and health is much more complex than lots of people assume, and exercise and nutrition are often more important than weight when it comes to health."

Interesting. Could you say more about that? Does this mean that a person can weigh a lot and maybe appear to many to be fat but actually be very healthy?
