The Internet: The Biggest Change To Politics Ever

All Things Consider — By on January 12, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Over in Massachusetts Republican senatorial candidate Scott Brown recently raised over a million dollars in a single day through the internet. That’s pretty impressive. Okay, scratch that, it’s very impressive. I also think it’s prophetic. While insurgency campaigns are in style today, the reason that they’re at all serious is because of the fundraising ability of the internet. Scott Brown’s money rally is proof that this isn’t a liberal thing (as President Obama is still the best example today of how effective the internet can be in raising the profile of a candidate and filling the warchest). What it is though is a gamechanger. Now strategists will have to consider the possibility of what otherwise would be a longshot candidate raising huge coffers of money and what that then would mean for a race. If there’s been any revolutionary change in politics recently, this is it.
